Silk Art

Fifteen years ago, I started silk painting and began exploring this wonderful world of silk.  After taking formal classes with many renowned silk masters, around the USA and at SPIN (Silk Painters International) conferences, I have developed my own style of abstract painting on scarves, garments and frameable art.

My inventive nature created an abstract method of dyeing scarves that have an organic and natural flow.  At home, I work on 6 scarves at a time, each on its own frame with production in mind.  My silks receive five layers of wax and dye.  For me the focus is on fluid, contiguous and harmonious design throughout the length of the scarf.  I use the width of the scarf for visual depth and color uniformity. Texture, color blending and other techniques are incorporated to create natural patterns and surface design.  My color philosophy is this:  a scarf should be enhanced with two dominant colors, then with other colors added for blending, enhancement and a surprise.  With all this silk dyeing happening at once, it is still a relaxed and fun method of color exploration, layering and creative production.

As a retired high school teacher of 25 years, I love teaching silk painting in my home studio and other venues. I sell at local galleries in Mason City and Clear Lake, city markets, street festivals, and now on Etsy.
